Not for nothing but if I was told to work without pay I’d be a little ticked off too. I haven’t really been following the case and have no idea who this guy is, and he may be a huge asshole, but I am not sure why the judge has the authority to force him to continue working the case unless the court is picking up the costs.

Well, it’s not Judges fault the lawyers client is refusing to pay him.
