In that scenario, Hatch would simply be a caretaker POTUS until 2020. Then we’d have an open field for candidates; I doubt very highly that he’d make grab for the brass ring himself.

He’s 84 years old, which would make the selection of a new vice president a matter of some urgency. He could pick fellow Mormon Mitt Romney, then resign as soon as Mitt is sworn in.
