re: #76 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

That was the plan: let chaos rule for a few years and the people welcomed a strong hand to put things back in order.

I heard enough people say in the early 90’s “So they gave us freedom of speech, but what good did that do us?”.

My response was that nobody gave them freedom of speech, that is a natural right we are all born with, they just stopped punishing people for exercising it.

this is important. and yes to some extent it is framing

american slaves werent “given their freedom” or “granted rights”.
those rights were always there. the system - the states and complicit federal governments, and the regionals and the locals - all the institutional and law enforcement levels suppressed and punished their ability to exercise the same natural rights as everybody else.

emancipation proclamation - 1863
CRA 1964
and there is STILL systemic discrimination (let alone racism and bigotry)
a very long row to hoe just to get to “liberty and justice for all

“interracial marriage”? it was the law that didnt allow it. nothing cosmic, natural or unalienable.

and the same is true today w/r/t the gay movement. they arent “getting anything new”. society is taking the long way around in recognizing that issues that mostly have not been thought of before have been institutionally ingrained. that instituionality has to be undone. and that can be complicated because of “the way things have always been”.

in all these cases it “seems” like they are “getting” something. that is only because they’ve been deprived it. when in fact they are “getting something back” that was taken from them by force.

it really boils down to the fact that the CRA, the gay movement. arent asking for anything extra.
only that liberty and just for all means for all.
