I listened to Kara Swisher’s interview with Susan Wojcicki (CEO of Youtube) a couple days ago and she made what I thought was a really good point:

It’s the SimCity problem: You had people who tried to maximize profit and maximum traffic such that they created a toxic stew, then tried to put in police and firemen only after everything had gone to shit. Worse, they did the classic corporate mistake: They overcompensated for that initial lawlessness by clamping down in such a fashion that those who’d been following the rules (what there were) and trying to promote a healthy community got clubbed over the head right next to the trolls and either left for greener pastures or scaled back their involvement in said community.
