Marriage is a legal contract. It gives you responsibility for another person’s life. It gives you another person’s stuff (houses, cars, etc.). There are legal benefits to marriage that are huge.

The same benefits could be made available through “civil unions”.

Actually, my church (Catholic) does not consider a couple to be married unless they have been married in the church by a priest. So anyone who is married by other means, according to the beliefs of my faith, is not really “married” in the eyes of Got, even though they are partners in a “civil union”.
