Looking around the web, it is clear that last Sunday’s episode of Cosmos is causing the expected churn among the more zealous of religious outlets.

Having just watched that episode I think that the best thing Tyson did was telling of the Eye Story. It wasn’t new, and Tyson’s version is very similar to that which has shown up on various science documentaries the past few years. Still, it did a good job in showing (though it could have used a few more words) on how an aperture (in this case the ancestor to our pupils) is all that is needed to create a (relatively) clear image.

I don’t discount the power of story-telling - words are magick to us humans. The evolution of language is the central actor in what makes us modern humans.

Still, I grimace when I see the gloss over the real discoveries, and the total lack of what I think is the, by far, most important, aspect to the undertaking we call “science”.
