I’ve noticed that most of the assholes who see healthcare as a “commodity” are those who have, through good fortune, never found themselves at the mercy of the “free market.” Never had to worry that even stepping foot in the ER could mean slapped with a massive bill that they couldn’t begin to afford to pay.

But not all. I have a nephew with a serious preexisting condition who thinks if we could just buy insurance across state lines he would be able to get great affordable insurance. He has never been able to tell me why a company would compete for a person who is likely to cost them more money than they get from him.
Free market! Competition! Yay!
