It is the usual in politics: When you’re ahead, you don’t debate unless forced to. When behind, you demand debates to try to gain ground.

Politics has always been this way. Mr. Bryce has nothing to gain from a debate, and Ms. Myers has nothing to lose.

That is the way politics works, whether it’s for a town council or for the US House.
