Yeah: I read that piece and it was extraordinarily depressing: out of the four “Levels” of Trump voters, only one of them seems to be even remotely susceptible to even thinking about not voting for him next year - the others seem hopeless. Ziegler’s tale of the guy who simply “got angry and left” when challenged over stock GOP blame-shifting seems, unfortunately, all too typical of those “heartland” voters.

And even the “Level 1” types seem - no matter how incapable Trump is shown to be - so hag-ridden by the fear of “socialism”* that trying to convince them to actually vote for Democrats is an uphill climb at best: and that fostering disillusionment (i.e. getting them to stay home on Election Day) is going to have to be a major campaign strategy for large parts of the country.

*Myself, I’m thinking that “Fear of Socialism” - at least as far as most of these “heartland” types are concerned isn’t so much economic - that a President Sanders is going to try to Sovietize the U.S. overnight - but is also (mainly?) a cover for racism, sexism, xenophobia, etc: the biggest fear being that the carefully-constructed framework of prejudices that underlies too many Americans’ notions of “nationhood” are going to be ideologically dismantled.
