The one who really lucked out was Putin. Good thing (without sarcasm) that Sputnik V turned out to be a good vaccine, because they began injecting it when it was basically only half-tested.

But I can’t understand why the Russians didn’t immediately submit Sputnik V to the EMA for emergency-use review and authorization. They could’ve been first to market with an effective COVID-19 vaccine and there’s some major prestige that goes with that.
