Cousin is a criminal defense attorney; repped some major-level dealers down in north San Diego County. Before taking a case, he’d routinely require $300K+ retainers. I once asked him why.

“Well, one because they can afford it. And two, you don’t want to be chasing these guys around trying to get them to pay you, ‘cause they won’t. And three, if you do somehow manage to get some leverage to get them to pay you, they’ll work the numbers and figure out if it might just be cheaper to off you.”
