I’m pretty sure Trump’s initial goal in 2016 was simply to get attention so as to leverage kicking off a series of additional grifts. Rot in the GOP and a slate of fear-mongering dough face candidates who couldn’t do hate rhetoric in Trump’s class led to Trump getting the nomination. And then the 30+ years of Clinton hate were utilized along with the media bias for their eyeballs and horse race instead of honest journalism led to what we got.

And part of it was also a conservative backlash for having a black POTUS for eight years.
