Randomly generated numbers on the PC, since we’re all so scientific nowadays.
Before the intertubes, they’d just rolled dice and tossed coins.

Actually, dice and coins are better random number generators than computers. Dice and coins are True Random Number Generators (TRNGs), as opposed to most computers, which use Pseudo-Random Number Generators (PRNGs). Although there are specially-built computers that can be used as TRNGs.
