I’ve only seen the first season of 24 , which apparently was not as bad/extreme as the later seasons.

What struck me at the time was how powerful the effect of audience point of view was. Viewers saw scenes of the bad guys in action, so the audience knew there was something there for torture by Bauer et al. to find.

The show would have been very different if viewers had no more information than the anti-terrorist protagonists, and were confronted with torturing people in a fog of war situation.

Well, it was off the air for a few years, and its new season is set in London. I’m going to give this reboot a chance and see if its decent.
