But not all. I have a nephew with a serious preexisting condition who thinks if we could just buy insurance across state lines he would be able to get great affordable insurance. He has never been able to tell me why a company would compete for a person who is likely to cost them more money than they get from him.
Free market! Competition! Yay!

There’s few things as sad as someone who believes that the “free market” encourages competition. The exact opposite is true, the “free market” encourages consolidation. A single company that serves a single sector is more cost-efficient than numerous ones duplicating the same work.
