You mentioned the 1921 Tulsa Massacre, which kicked off HBO’s Watchmen series. I recall reading comments from a good many people (many of them younger) who absolutely no idea whatsoever of that atrocity. A lot of them initially thought it was entirely fictional….until they read about it on Wikipedia. They were genuinely horrified and there were countless comments noting they’d never learned about it in school.
I learned about Rosewood from the John Singleton movie of the same name. Not the only reason I’m obsessed with this topic, but I can remember that feeling of discontent and anger that events like that happened and were just kind of swept away. I mean, people don’t even know that “race riots” used to mean whites heading into an ethnic or black neighborhood.
The way history creates a narrative in which there’s good bits and the bad stories are always built with a rising action makes me fucking insane.
