I got an E-mail from the Democratic Party offering to pay for my airfare and a hotel room to attend the convention. (As far as I could tell it was real and not a scam.)

I will be in Canada, so I cannot go, and I am not sure I would want to go to a national party convention anyway (unless I am being nominated for President - like that would happen to a village trustee in a town of 128).

Well, you’re about as qualified as Sarah Palin. I remember at the time, I thought to myself: “So she’s the executive of a political unit with the population of Tacoma. I don’t know who the mayor of Tacoma is, and I live in Seattle!” (Well, south—about 1/3 of the way there.)
