Back in the early 2000’s one of Canon’s digitals had an electronic shutter that was silent. So they had the sound of various classic Canon camera shutters that could play when you pressed the release. My favorite was the T-90’s - the last great manual focus camera from Canon that set the style for EOS to come.

I have heard that it is the law in Japan that camera phones have to make a clicking shutter sound to let people know that their picture is being taken in public.
