Ohio has played a central role in US Presidential politics since at least the 1840’s. Ohio was “the west” after the Constitution was put in place and Ohio was the gateway for a great many migrations from New England and the central Atlantic states.

With the ascent of the religious right in the GOP, Ohio has taken on the mantle of the test case, to see if the GOP in such garbs can control Ohio.

The reason in the last few decades Florida has seemed more important than Ohio is simply the mass migration of retirees to Florida have sent that population high, a population that is more singular (retiree) in nature than some place like Ohio.

With New York (due to NYC) and California being almost one-party blocs, places like Ohio and Florida get the attention as the fighting grounds.

This election comes down to Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. So many of the other states are pretty locked into their identities. Sure we can dream of Texas flipping, or for Iowa to come back to its senses, but those are long shots.
