This guy’s selective readings of their biblical reference materials ends up doing precisely the opposite of what Jesus intended (and that which the Pope, and Benedict before him) wants, which is to better care for those who lack the resources to survive. It’s about caring for others.

Some folks just seem to lack that gene (compassion).

It’s been my experience that most of those who support “private” (read: religious) charity as preferable over the social safety net do so mostly because it jibes with their idea that those who need charity the most should be shamed for accepting help and seek “redemption.” Having the Pope actually hold the Church to its own teachings of giving help without beating people over the head for perceived inadequacies takes all the “fun” out of it.
