Our PBS station will be starting a little series entitled “Victorian Slum House” tonight.

I believe they meant “trading in rags” rather than “trading rags,” but I think this may offer some handy tips for surviving in a Trumpian economy.

are they gonna put 20 people in each room, and have fathers fucking their daughters when they aren’t busy pimping their wives out? That’s basically London through the first world war. Jack London writes in People of the Abyss about walking along with a couple of blokes who were also down and out, and how the one kept picking up stuff off the sidewalk. London finally realized to his horror that the guy was picking up little bits of garbage, like rotting bits of oranges, and eating them, because basically everybody who was down and out was fucking starving. The other thing that made it all surreal was that like many big cities, London had a policy of not allowing vagrants to sleep in public spaces at night, which meant that everyone who couldn’t find a salvation army bed literally spent the entire freaking night walking the streets. Then, they would collapse during daylight hours when apparently it was okay to sleep in public areas. And the then the idle rich and the folks with jobs could walk by and tut-tut about how the lazy scum was down and out because they were too idle to get off their asses in the daytime and look for work.
