It’s the SimCity problem: You had people who tried to maximize profit and maximum traffic such that they created a toxic stew, then tried to put in police and firemen only after everything had gone to shit. Worse, they did the classic corporate mistake: They overcompensated for that initial lawlessness by clamping down in such a fashion that those who’d been following the rules (what there were) and trying to promote a healthy community got clubbed over the head right next to the trolls and either left for greener pastures or scaled back their involvement in said community.

Except in practice, it’s usually those following the rules that get fucked and the trolls and folks exploiting the Wild West just move on to their next atrocities, exploiting the benefit of the doubt they had extended to them before. It’s bracingly rare that you get comeuppance in the vein of Alex Jones’ deplatforming, and that took how many years of verifiable harassment and incitement?
