re: #101 The Ghost of Quesos Past

Living in a social conservative area (that’s rife with sexual hypocrisy), I’ve grown up around men who view their daughters as one kind of object—to be kept pure and passed to an “acceptable” male—and women they want to be sexually available as a different kind of object. And that happens within a larger cultural context where there’s a madonna/whore complex built into religion and gender norms, but then is refined when assholes come together and give each other permission to be predatory. Sometimes that’s just the local bros who hang out together, but it’s also how The Catholic Church’s predation problem just keeps chugging along.

A subset of victim-blaming is demarcating the “wrong” types of people who a priori cannot be sexually victimized. That conservative sexual mores create a permanent demimonde of individuals who’ve lost their social value is a feature not a bug, because it creates acceptable targets for exploitation and outright predation.

Yeah I think you’re right about that. I’m very protective of my niece but that’s because she’s my niece. I would be the same way of a nephew. I want my niece to know that her being a girl shouldn’t stop her from pursuing her passions and dreams.
