Nope, I’d say this is the last center-right player left on the world stage, and, drifting leftward though we may be at present, we’ll always remain at least a bit more starboard than our friends on the international stage.

Now, there’s a host of reasons for that, of course. I think the largest is we still retain a sense of national destiny left over from our participation in WWII and the Cold War. We still see ourselves as the leader of the free world (don’t we even refer to the POTUS thus?).

You say “drifting leftward” like it’s a bad thing… at least I interpret it in the context you use as a bad thing.

Give what is out there in the to the “right” of America, I don’t.
