What he is saying is that the right has prevented the action the establishment left wants in these areas. I don’t think Douthat thinks hate is good, but he doesn’t want an amnesty without the southern border being locked down.

Look at the last election results regarding Hispanic turnout, and tell me that holding the establishment at bay hasn’t already led to sweeping defeat. In an effort to stave off whites becoming a demographic minority the GOP’s immigration policy has already led to disastrous political consequences. The same thing will happen as climate change becomes more and more self evident.

Failure to accept and deal with reality is always self defeating in the long term.
