I don’t really consider it a serious effort at the moment, mostly because the media’s hailing it as some grand “concession” by the GOP to acknowledge the need for a path to citizenship. Even had a wingnut post a link to a WSJ editorial, which (predictably) is accusing Obama of not really wanting reform because he hasn’t “reached out” to Rubio.

The Republicans are caught in a fine trap —- they can’t afford to do nothing on this issue, because that will accelerate their dire demographic problems (e.g., TX becoming a swing state).

However, the base isn’t going to support anything they view as an amnesty. When the base gets riled up, the ugly nativism gushes out for all to see. This exercise by the GOP leaders is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline.
