I remember a neighbor who was a brother of a friend, very proud of his Irish Heritage as am I but constantly bitching about the “Mexicans.” My brother is still in touch. Says he hasn’t changed much unfortunately. That’s xenophobic parenting for you. I like to think my brother and I benefited since Dad had coworkers from all over when he was in the restaurant industry.

My dad is proud to be an Irishman. I wonder what would happen if I told him about the Irish history and that our forefathers, despite their impeccable military service history, were probably reviled the same way Trump treats Mexicans, and that may be why they left Pennsylvania for fish country.
