She is in denial that she, her own body, herself, performed an abortion on itself to save itself. This is one of the evolved traits of the female mammal - aborting of fetuses in case of emergency.

In such a situation all that the doctor is doing, indeed what is the goal of medicine, is to improve the well being of as many individuals as possible. In this case, the choice was 1 adult death and 1 fetal termination, or just 1 fetal termination. Since there was 0 chance of the fetus surviving, the doctors procedure is solely to improve the odds of the mother’s survival and health.

That the Santorums cannot accept this is a sign of some deep rejection of reality:
1) that “abortion” is a process that mammals naturally do in extreme cases;
2) that the abortion procedure the doctor wanted to do had no effect on the final viability of the fetus.
