Damned good article. Folks today don’t realize just how long this whole deal with the GOP has been going on. Think what has made the biggest difference has been the end of the Cold War, robbing the GOP of an “Evil Empire” to rail against. Dubya tried to revive that spirit with the “Axis of Evil,” and even today the GOP is trying to inflate North Korea and Iran when they aren’t still giving Russia weary glances, but overall the whole “If you don’t elect us, America is doomed!” business is falling apart.

The USSR really was an existential threat (of mutual destruction). Nothing else since then comes remotely close. This lack of an existential threat is clearly causing all kinds of trouble within movement conservatism.
