re: #97 goddamnedfrank

The reports I’m seeing show what looks like a ridiculous amount of damage for a 6.4 quake in a more or less first world industrialized nation. What’s up with that? I rode out the 6.8 Nisqually quake in Seattle in a brick building built in 1906. Only one person died in that quake, of a heart attack. Some buildings were condemned after the fact but none fell or were visibly damaged beyond some cracks and broken facades. I have to wonder what’s up with Taiwanese building codes, a Ring of Fire nation with their capabilities should have built much stronger structures.

Depends a lot on the type of quake and building types.

My biggest… The 7.9 in Peru nearly 8 years ago. After that they scare the shite out of me. Was living at the beach 40km south of Lima. Surprisingly few deaths. Went outside during the quake, saw ripples running across the grass then up the side of the house in the glass. Very little damage to the house, but fellow teacher was on the 16th floor of an apartment block had his bedroom wall destroyed by the block next door hitting it.

The Tsunami warning was less fun.
