The last time a Republican Presidential candidate wasn’t on the ballot in a state was 1912, when Teddy Roosevelt ran as the Progressive/ “Bull Moose” candidate and kept President William Howard Taft off the ballot in South Dakota.

Taft won eight electoral votes that year, from Vermont and Utah.

So its been over a century. Poor Taft, not often an incumbent finishes third.
