Arthur C. Clarke was probably my favorite SF author. Others were the very funny and erudite L. Sprague DeCamp, whom I knew personally, the visionary cowboy Jack Williamson, whom I also knew, and Clifford Simak, whose gentle tales incorporated some startlingly original insights.
