Confederate soldiers as a whole thought they were the true patriots of American ideals. Just because you think it doesn’t make it reality.

Apart from my initial sarcastic BS … AND apart from the issue of slavery … Confederate soldiers were on the States’ Rights (versus Federalism) side of an ongoing debate of the day. For a good depiction of the position, see the characterizations of Lee and Jackson in the motion picture “Gods and Generals”.
