Technology marches on. Today’s biometrics are better than that. If it is matched to a palm print tinfoil won’t spoof it. Of course there are always ways to foil safety systems, but most people don’t. Also it could disable itself if tampered with by design or call the police with the guns location.

Reliability is the one downside but even that can be overcome in time and it isn’t like guns don’t jam now.

Those systems are far too vulnerable to electronic interference for my comfort. Some of the cartels down in Mexico already have gear powerful enough to jam RFID. I’d not like to have the weapon I need for home defense be inoperable because the attacked have a jammer. No, no mandate for that kind of high-tech measure is likely to be wise ever. However well the system is designed, there will always be a counter measure.
