The thing is Norquist really has done a great deal of damage to the conservative cause. He managed to either bully or con so many Republican officeholders into signing his ridiculous pledge that the Party has effectively painted itself into an absolutist corner. You saw this in the 2012 GOP debates when not one candidate would support even hypothetically agree to a ten to one spending cuts to tax increase budget balancing proposal. That really helped sell the idea that all Republicans are just fucking insane fundamentalist zealots totally uninterested in practical solutions.
You know i was never of the belief that it was simply Norquist behind the refusal to raise taxes. Raising taxes has been the central line of attack against dems for years, it inevitably became impossible for any conservative to support the concept with or without some pledge.
