No, it doesn’t have to be. I just like it that way. Most of the times I like my amenities - a good winter-rated sleeping bag, a not-so-cheap tent, a propane camping stove. But after experiencing being out in the woods with it just being me, a coat, a canteen and a large knife, I can understand the appeal.
