Sadly, we live in a revengeful society. The Collective We can’t look past revenge and put backs. If the society can look past petty revenge, maybe, just maybe, we can make a better world.

Seems to me that’s why there’s a push on to make jail more retributive and less reformative. Scaring people away from breaking the law is looked on in some circles as more effective than dealing with the causes and reducing recidivism.

Of course deterrents do work with a portion of citizens, namely those who demand jails be hell holes, but it doesn’t work on the majority of people, those who value society and don’t need threats to act morally.

For those who break the law, their belief in their ability to not be caught, or emotional states where they simply don’t care or the reward far surpasses fear of even a hell hole jail can be affected by methods other than abusive treatment.
