One of my dogs back in the 1970s got just ONE bee sting on his face that turned into a life-threatening emergency. I can’t imagine a little puppy getting 400+ stings and surviving.
I bet they were Africanized bees. As climate change makes the US hotter, they are going to spread north and this sort of thing will become more common.
