I have often asked why China has offered its tacit and passive support to this odd anachronistic regime, but I guess the long game is that it can only annoy the US and make it look bad, especially should it elect an unstable and inexperienced leader.

China, despite its great size and strength, is still smarting from the Japanese occupation. Though they would not admit to it, the Chinese fear another invasion. North Korea is a buffer between China and an ally of the USA and Japan, so propping up crazy cousin Kim’s regime serves a useful purpose. Plus, NK has natural resources that are useful to China, that the NK government is perfectly happy to part with if China continues to back up the regime.

Plus, money under the table is certainly involved.
