Did any of you read this a couple days ago? Good read on General/President Grant.

Interesting stuff, and jibes with some things I’ve recently read about historians’ reassessments of Grant’s post-war reputation. Most recap histories (well, non-Lost-Cause ones, anyway) tend to give General Grant high marks for pretty much everything, but tended to deprecate President Grant as an honest, well-meaning, but ineffectual Executive who let his Administration devolve into a cesspool of corruption and grift.

Ronald White’s piece does hint at a possible reason, though….

Grant’s fall from American grace largely coincided with the rise of white supremacy in the early 20th century. During that period, leaders who stood up for the rights of African Americans were not often lionized.
