Virginia has become increasing metropolitan, at least the parts close to DC. And with that the culture has changed from the old south to a more contemporary-issue driven political atmosphere.

Many states have seen changes in nature the past 40 years or so. I mentioned Iowa. Once a progressive state (from the start), it has been taken over by the religious right. Same thing happened in Ohio, but being a more populous state with actual cities it has not been possible for the religious right to totally dominate it.

And in North Carolina, the growth of the largest cities into quite large cities and a progressive agenda starting to push through in those areas has taken NC from being the confederacy to something that I can see could be a progressive leader in a decade or two.

This is why Trump plays to the rural grievance theatre: urbanization is transforming some states and with that comes a new sense of political balance.
