A long, long time ago, I read Hawking’s paper “On the Thermodynamics of Black Holes”, and I remember one line from it about Hawking radiation:
“In the unlikely event of the black hole creating and emitting an observer…”
I believe Hawking now believes that information is not destroyed inside a black hole. What really happens awaits a quantum theory of gravity. Some scientists are now proposing that black holes don’t form, but black stars (no event horizon and no singularity, based on a skim of the Scientific American article.)
