Got a letter from my bank last week. I can no longer pay by cash or by check for health care services from my HSA. It must be paid via an electronic transfer or debit card so that the funds and provider can be verified by the federal government.

The whole point of an HSA is that the income diverted to it is tax exempt and for the purposes of paying insurance deductibles. Letting you take out cash from the account seems like an easy way to make it pay for things it’s nominally not allowed to.

You can do a lot of things based on a constitutional right to privacy, but not get a cavity filled or buy a pair of glasses without government approval.

No, you can still do those things privately without government approval. You just can’t expect the government to subsidize them at the same time.
