I actually would say Douthat isn’t a moderate, he’s just smart enough to realize that ultimately simply screaming “No!” and stamping your feet doesn’t work. Government does have things it needs to do and the current paralysis isn’t good for the nation.

Part of things being done is accepting that ideology sometimes have to give way to practicality. Douthat’s not arguing for that, if anything, he’s arguing that inaction is preferable if it means avoiding actions that would go against one’s ideology.
