re: #53 engineer cat

iterative development is what i have been doing for 27 years

one of the biggest lies promoted by agile is that the only alternative to agile is waterfall or cowboys

the last time i encountered anybody stupid enough to attempt waterfall was in about the year of 1996

For me, the last time I saw the waterfall method was on my last year of Computer Engineering (2005). The professor that lectured the Software Engineering class swore by waterfall, and we had to make our projects following that methodology. My project in particular was going to be a great FUBAR if it was done following the waterfall method, because, more due to our curiosity, we found out we didn’t have the expertise to complete the project because it required a very expensive library[1] to make it work. When we argued that we had to add this to the expectations, the professor said that it wasn’t necessary at that stage. That when we’d gotten to implementation (!!!), then we’d have to go back and amend everything to include this.

I personally didn’t like his “solution”. It was going to inflate the costs, everyone will be blind-sighted, and we’d lose valuable time learning the library. Plus having to go over the gazillion pages of documentation to force this in.

[1] IIRC, the license was over $1,000. It was really worth every penny tho.
