re: #103 Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut

My observation is that the wave of hate erupting in the professional propaganda media, after the election of Obama, was aimed at those who were feeling increasingly disfranchised economically. That’s why so much of the organizations like “Tea Parties” were done in rust belt states and coal states. The white-victimization stories were to develop an electorate to ensure that GOP candidates were in office, candidates who would act favorably towards their big donors.

Here in San Diego the population has always been diverse - remember this is where Spain discovered California. So my experience in southern California, and with younger people here, probably won’t apply much to many other places. Over all young people here, like everywhere, are more concerned with sex and popular entertainment than they are with carrying the weapons of the social wars of the older generation. My experience around here with younger people is now more limited than it was say 10 years ago, but whether at extension classes or just out shopping, my take is that young people are more into hedonism than anything else, and that’s not new. It’s not that there were never racial tensions in San Diego, but it seems to never really develop into anything.

It’s us older folk who start trying to manipulate in more sophisticated ways. Most of us are not in a position to really manipulate many others, but those who have some wealth will force their will via politicians. E.g., when Hedgecock rants on the air he is trying to do his buddies’ favors. These days, as everyone now knows, San Diego’s mayor has a sex-power problem, and it dominates the local talk. Matters of race don’t come up much in the media outlets here, outside of the undocumented worker problem.
