My hope is that the entire Evil Bullshit Empire; Republicans, religious right quacks, Russian stooge conspiracy media, MLM pseudoscience, etc; is about to collapse in a massive heap of cultural wreckage. What are the chances? Slim, but more than zero, at least in terms of national political importance.
There is a precedent for a quack movement disintegrating with breathtaking speed just as it reached the height of its power and influence: the 1920s Ku Klux Klan. In 1925, the Klan boasted 6 million members. Then the most powerful Klan leader, DC Stephenson of Indiana, was convicted in a sensational murder and kidnapping case. Membership went into freefall. By 1930, it was down to 30,000 nationwide. The national organization was formally abolished in `1944 after it could not pay back taxes, to be replaced by a menagerie of local and regional Klans that seem to flit in and out of existence like so many biting gnats.
