They’re both Slavic languages. However Slovene is a South Slavic language and Russian is a East Slavic language. According to my Slovene cousin, most Slovenes learn English and German as their secondary and third language.

My father spoke Slovak. He could carry on a basic conversation with the Russian couple across the street where I grew up. The wife used to get so excited being able to speak to someone other than her husband. My dad would ride along probably only getting enough to have a basic idea.

As a little kid I would stand there next to my dad amazed. The tone and delivery of Russian is very different to a little kid that has only heard English. It was the 50s early 60s.
