re: #108 Ferdinand

My son and his new girlfriend spent Christmas week with me and his stepmom here in western Washington, and had a blast. She grew up in New Delhi, and was a fan of the Twilight books as a girl, and yesterday they drove out to Forks and the Pacific Coast where the books are set. They had a blast and even came home with a bag of beach clay.
Today we dropped them off at 3am for an airport shuttle back to SeaTac for a 7am flight back to Albuquerque, came home and went to bed. Phone rings at 6:15am. Their flight to ABQ has been cancelled because of the blizzard in ABQ (the one thing none of us thought to check was the weather for them back home) and they can’t fly until tomorrow morning. So, they’re spending a day sleeping at a Tacoma Airbnb.
Travel adventures in your 20s. I remember them well.

The first time I went to Japan when I was 17 as an exchange student no one told me how things were supposed to work when I got there. I knew the name of someone picking me up, but I didn’t even know that you have to clear customs and leave the secure area. I was waiting for her to be in the gate area (granted, at that time for domestic flights at least you could accompany people to gates in US). I waited about two hours before finally asking someone. Then on the way home I missed a connecting flight in LAX and had to spend the night on a bench in the terminal. I woke hearing someone rustling in my bags. A wiry elderly black women had boosted a book, but I let her take it and pretended not to see. She took Woody Allen’s Without Feathers. (Lots of making collect calls back home from public phones, etc., seems so strange now.)
