Our “Child of Whitney” and the Big House are still standing even after an almost direct hit from the eye of the storm. The incredible craftsmanship and skills of the enslaved Africans who were forced to build the house for the owning family is the reason it has weathered many storms since 1791. It is just one example of the many buildings, roads, structures, and landscape built by enslaved hands that form the foundation of this country’s development. Whitney Plantation will require extensive restoration, but we are extremely grateful that our original structures, including the cabins, barns, and kitchen are still standing (photos coming soon). The Antioch Church, built by freedmen also stands. During our time of closure, we will continue to pay our staff.
